Professional adventurers sailing to the Atlantic Poles of Inaccessibility while conducting plastic research

Southampton, UK - B&G®, the world’s leading sailing navigation and instrument specialist, today announced its partnership with Hugo and Ross Turner, two professional adventurers who are setting out to reach the Atlantic pole of inaccessibility and also become the first people to reach all the world’s poles of inaccessibility (POI).  The twins will be facing incredibly challenging environments as they sail through some of the most hostile and demanding weather conditions. Initially the pair will begin their expedition sailing the Atlantic, which will lead them into their UK tour, stopping at various locations to promote ocean advocacy and hydrogen fuel technology.

Sailing in a Class 40 yacht, beginning in summer 2022, the twins will set sail from the UK via the Madeira and the Azores, aiming to reach the Atlantic pole while conducting a plastic survey for Plymouth University’s International Marine Litter Research Unit. Ahead of this expedition the boat has been kitted out with the latest B&G electronics including Zeus™3S, Halo20+ radar, and Triton² speed pack. ‘B&G have been at the cutting edge of innovation, which is a value right at the centre of our project, and as a market leader with a full range of reliable products, it will allow us to focus on the plastic research and key project deliverables’ said Hugo Turner. A prototype hydrogen fuel cell will be installed on the yacht to replace the diesel engine, so the yacht will be powered by 100% green clean energy. Working with OceanOPS the yacht will deploy ARGO buoys and attempt to collect retired buoys to be reused, repaired or recycled. While at sea, the team will collect data for a research study which aims to identify macro plastics in the ocean which can be validated from the Sentinel satellites operated by the European Space Agency. The results of this study, in the long term, will help build a clean up strategy for ocean plastics. The twins will be sharing real time video via satellite to allow audiences to follow in their journey as it happens.

“B&G are excited to be supporting Hugo and Ross on this expedition”, Simon Conder – Global Head of Brand, B&G. “With a passion for the environment and innovation, they align perfectly with B&G’s core principles, so it is an ideal partnership for us. The B&G equipment we have provided will enable them to gather important environmental data from this isolated part of the world and we look forward to following the progress of their journey.”
